Crime/Thriller; South Korea
125 minutes
Unless you're a total square that's been living under a rock for the last 5 years, you know damn well that Korea is the awesomely-fucked-up-film capitol of the world right now. You think French New Wave is the pinnacle of crazy filmmaking? Fuck off! Korea will take your Godard, send him to crazy school, douse him in crazy juice and then rape him in the ass with crazy lube. That's how fucked up Korean filmmaking is right now. And "The Chaser" is a primo example of just how crazy Koreans are. After "Oldboy" I thought I'd run the gamut of disturbing, jaw droppingly Fruedian psycho filmmaking, but "The Chaser" gave me a serious pause. "How much deeper does this rabbit hole go?", I wondered. This movie is dark, creepy, gritty and BRUTAL. If you're not into that kind of thing, definitely pass on this one because it will probably scar you for life, but if you can stomach "Oldboy" you can probably hang with this as well.
Give this some time if you're into: Oldboy and/or the rest of Chan Wook Park's Vengeance trilogy, Silence of the Lambs, serial killers, dark shit, Korean films
